Netizens are eagerly searching for information about this unique durian. Durian is loved for all its special qualities, including its thorny skin that makes the appearance of this fruit stand out compared to other fruits. Who would have thought that there is a durian that is very different because its skin is smooth without thorns."
The thornless durian has become a hot topic among Thai netizens. A viral video shows the appearance of this bald durian. Is this bald durian a new variety? How could a durian grow without thorns? Here are some interesting facts about thornless durian that have caught attention:
Viral Bald Durian Among Netizens.
According to an Instagram post by seasia.news on July 24, 2024, the thornless durian is found in Thailand. A video of a farmer showing the thornless durian has been viewed millions of times, sparking curiosity and debate among netizens. In the video, the farmer appears to be splitting open the thornless durian. Its skin is thick and brownish in color. When opened, there is a thick white layer of skin. After this layer is removed, chunks of the appetizing durian fruit are revealed.
The flesh of the durian fruit is appetizing with its bright yellow color and large size. "I thought this was a joke, but it really exists," commented a netizen. "Why does the durian look naked?" replied another netizen.

Many people think that the bald durian is a new variety. But the reality is, this durian is produced through a special technique. Quoting from Year of the Durian, interesting facts about this viral thornless durian have been revealed. In 2021, a durian farmer from Thailand, Panupong Pramualsuk, known as New, intentionally removed the thorns from the durian while the tree was still young. After the durian ripened, New posted a video about the thornless durian, which then went viral on social media.
"In 2022, New continued his experiments by doing the same thing to three other durian trees. He explained that this thornless durian comes from the monthong durian variety, which is known for its very delicious taste."
The translation of "Metode Menggunduli Durian" to English is "Method of Peeling Durian."
"New explains a method for removing the thorns from durian. When the durian is still small, the thorns are soft and can be removed by brushing them off. As the durian grows, its skin will 'heal' and leave marks in the areas that were once covered with thorns, making the surface of its skin smoother. New chooses not to remove the thorns around the stem, called the 'crown', and at the tip of the durian because they are concerned that this could damage the fruit flesh developing inside. So, even though the durian is bald, there are still remnants of thorns in certain parts."
"Indonesia Has Original Gundul Durian"
"Besides the bald durian produced through special techniques, there is also a type of durian that naturally has no thorns. This durian is found in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. The skin of this durian is very smooth, similar to a melon."
According to a report from the Mashable page, this thornless durian is the result of an experiment conducted by the Agricultural Seed Supervision and Certification Agency (BPSBP) over 12 years. In early 2007, residents of Dusun Trenggaluh, Desa Batu Mekar, Kecamatan Lingsar, Lombok Barat, reported the discovery of a thornless durian, which was then further researched. Maisin, one of the research team members, explained that the existence of the thornless durian is caused by a recessive gene from the female and male flowers that tends to appear when both grow side by side.
Also Found in the Philippines
"Besides in Indonesia, thornless durian is also found in the Philippines. The discovery of this thornless durian occurred in the 1950s in the Compostela Valley, which is located east of Davao City. In 1964, Philippine President Diosdado P. Macapagal also attempted to cultivate this type of thornless durian. However, unfortunately, most of the thornless durians that successfully grew had a less pleasant taste."
