Dream - Every country has different working hours. Typically, employees of a company or government agency will work nine hours a day. The overall work culture and labor laws in a country also greatly influence the working hours that employees must go through.
According to CNBC International, the United Nations body that oversees workers worldwide (International Labor Organization/ILO) has listed the five countries with the shortest average working hours in the world. Approximately, does Indonesia fall into the category of countries with the longest or shortest working hours in the world?
- Vanuatu: 24.7 average hours per week - Kiribati: 27.3 average hours per week - Mozambique: 28.6 average hours per week - Rwanda: 28.8 average hours per week - Austria: 29.5 average hours per week
The following is the translation of the 'Bahasa' text to 'English' while preserving any html tags: "The 5 countries with the longest working hours in the world are: - United Arab Emirates: Average of 52.6 hours per week - Gambia: Average of 50.8 hours per week - Bhutan: Average of 50.7 hours per week - Lesotho: Average of 49.8 hours per week - Congo: Average of 48.6 hours per week"
However, CNBC noted that the distribution of working hours may not be evenly distributed. In the UAE, 46 percent of those employed work more than 49 hours per week, which is considered 'excessive working hours' by the ILO. In comparison, only 8 percent of those working in Austria work beyond the excessive working hours limit.
The average American worker is in the middle position with 36.4 hours per week, according to ILO. This figure is lower than South Korea (37.9 hours), China (46.1 hours), Russia (37.8 hours), and India (47.7 hours), although higher than the United Kingdom (35.9 hours), Israel (35.4 hours), Canada (32.1 hours), and Norway (33.5 hours).
Americans also have longer working hours than the average workers in the European Union, which is 30.2 hours per week, according to 2022 data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
In a survey conducted by Randstad Workmonitor, 43 percent of Americans said that they feel the need to always be available for their superiors outside of regular working hours. In a separate survey, Morning Consult reported that 51 percent of Americans support slower employee response times outside of working hours, which is the norm in European workplaces.
According to ILO, working hours have a significant impact on workers' income, well-being, and living conditions. While it is crucial to protect workers' health and safety by limiting working hours and providing adequate rest and recovery time, ILO notes that it is equally important for workers to have access to the desired minimum number of working hours, avoiding involuntary part-time work and underemployment associated with time.
