Dream - As time goes by, human activities in a day are becoming increasingly hectic. This phenomenon necessitates the need for innovations that support human convenience in carrying out activities.
The current technological advancements one by one begin to support and fulfill those needs. This is also what then changes many aspects of human life, including lifestyle.
If in the past we needed to bring a wallet or bag wherever we go, now we only need a smartphone to make payments in public transportation, restaurants, supermarkets, healthcare, and so on. Visa has just released the Visa Consumer Payment Attitude Study 2023, which found that the cashless wave continues in Indonesia, where cash usage has dropped to 80%. From the study, it is known that in 2023, 92% of 1,000 Indonesian citizens consisting of Gen Z, Gen Y, Gen X, and Boomers from 10 cities chose to use digital wallets for payments.
Even payment through QRis has increased by 4%, which was previously 62% in 2022 and now becomes 66% in 2023. These numbers indicate the public's interest in contactless payments.
Payment without contact can also be applied to credit or debit cards. However, this payment method is still less popular compared to digital wallets or cash. In 2023 alone, payment using credit or debit cards is the least popular payment method with a rate of 75%. Some payment methods with cards even experience a decline, such as contactless credit or debit, online payment credit or debit, and contactless payments with e-money.
Payment without contact does indeed make life easier and the lifestyle of the community, such as vacations. Currently, there are more than 150 cities worldwide that have already adopted contactless payment technology for public transportation.
Like Japan, London, Hong Kong, and New York. So, you don't need to buy e-money cards anymore. In some countries, even the payment methods used are dominated by cashless and contactless. Some stores also use machines or self-service for payments, minimizing the transfer of cards. So, we don't need to enter ATM pins, making this payment method safer. It is this convenience that will make you more comfortable using contactless payments when traveling abroad.
Although so, the growth of contactless payment users in Indonesia is still very low. There are several obstacles that need to be addressed immediately, such as increasing the number of merchants ready to accept contactless payments.
There are 17 million credit cards and 100 million debit cards from Visa that need to be replaced with contactless credit or debit cards. In addition, there are still many cashiers who are unaware of the contactless feature of the merchant and the existing cards. One of the things that can accelerate the interest of the community to switch to contactless payments is by conducting education related to financial literacy.
"Visa is committed to continuously improving digital innovation in the payment ecosystem, working together with all stakeholders to reduce the financial inclusion gap and provide trusted global technology to ensure good risk management, in the form of various money movement solutions that can improve the lives of everyone, wherever they are, throughout Indonesia," said Riko Abdurrahman, President Director of Visa Indonesia in the presentation of the Visa Consumer Payment Attitudes Study 2023, in Jakarta on March 19, 2024.
