About 20 thousand pilgrims who were supposed to return through King Abdul Aziz Jeddah International Airport were forced to return through Amir Muhammad bin Abdul Aziz Airport (AMAA) in Madinah. As a result of this change, the pilgrims had to travel a considerable distance by land, which was exhausting.
"Regarding the change of the return route for 46 flights, since the beginning Garuda Indonesia has indeed been late in submitting flight schedules to GACA," said Saiful in his statement, Friday, June 28, 2024."
"Mujab explained that Garuda Indonesia's contract with the Ministry of Religious Affairs has been in place since the beginning. The contract also regulates the pilgrimage flight routes, both for wave I and wave II. Wave I pilgrims return via Jeddah and wave II via Madinah. 'I am surprised that Garuda is using the Saudi policy change as an excuse. They were actually late in applying for slot time,' said Saiful."
"So the change in slot 46 cluster is because Garuda was slow in coordinating with Saudi authorities. In addition, there were also planes that were not ready to fly," he added. According to Saiful, the lack of responsiveness from Garuda Indonesia's performance is worsened by issues of flight delays or tardiness."
One week after the return of the Hajj pilgrims, Garuda has transported 50 batches. From that process, at least seven batches experienced flight delays of more than 2 hours, namely SOC 6, UPG 2, KNO 2, KNO 3, JKS 8, PDG 3, and SOC 16. The worst delay occurred to the pilgrims of batch 3 from Kualanamu (KNO 03), which was delayed for 12 hours and 30 minutes.
"Delay up to 12 hours without proper notification. Everything was informed suddenly. Even the pilgrims had already boarded the bus from the hotel to the airport, only to be informed that the plane was late," said Saiful."
He said that this has a systemic impact, because it is related to the transit hotel which already has the next group that will occupy the same hotel. As a result of this Garuda problem, the affected pilgrims are finally disadvantaged. The On Time Performance or OTP is very poor," he said.
Based on Kemenag data, out of 50 flights, 2 clusters were faster, 20 clusters were on time, 8 clusters were delayed for 30 minutes to 1 hour, 13 clusters were delayed for 1 to 2 hours, and 7 clusters were delayed for more than 2 hours. Saiful hopes that Garuda Indonesia will focus on improving performance on the remaining flights to repatriate Indonesian pilgrims. Make sure the aircraft to be used is ready. The flight crew is also ready to serve, so that the potential for delays or flight delays does not recur.
