Dream - Muslims will endure hunger and thirst while fasting in the month of Ramadan. Nevertheless, a Muslim must still maintain oral health even though they do not consume anything from dawn until breaking the fast. Many assume that they do not need to brush their teeth while fasting. However, this thinking is not correct.
The Chairman of AFDOKGI, Prof. drg. Suryono, S.H., M.M., Ph.D, stated that many things happen in the oral cavity when we fast. Among them are the mouth becoming dry, saliva becoming thicker, bad breath, and many more.
Suryono said, at Masjid Agung Trans Studio Bandung on Wednesday, March 20, 2024.
He explained that with saliva that becomes thicker than usual, the growth of bacteria in our mouth will become faster. This is what will result in bad breath, especially if there are leftover food residues.
He explained that when fasting, the function of our chewing will decrease, even though the function of chewing is a natural cleaning effect of our mouth. "Well, this also has an effect on the environment of our oral cavity, the growth of bacteria will become faster, especially if there are leftover food. This is what causes bad breath," he said. "During fasting, the function of chewing will decrease, even though the function of chewing is a natural cleaning effect from the movement of teeth. This will worsen the condition of the mouth," he added.
Therefore, he suggests that people who are fasting should still diligently brush their teeth. Because using a miswak or brushing teeth is one of the emphasized sunnahs. There is no need to be afraid of breaking the fast because, as it has been explained, brushing teeth does not invalidate the fast.
"I suggest that even during the fasting month, one should still diligently brush their teeth. In fact, Mr. ustadz said that brushing teeth or using a miswak is one of the reinforced Sunnahs," he said.
Meanwhile, the Chairperson of ARSGMPI, Dr. drg. Julita Hendrartini, M.Kes., AAK, suggests to continue brushing teeth at least 2 times a day during the fasting month. Those two times are after suhoor and before bedtime. Julita also urges to gargle during the day using antiseptic mouthwash so that the mouth feels fresher and odorless.

"However, as explained, the saliva slows down, causing bacteria. And certainly after breaking the fast before sleeping," he continued. Report: Khaira Amaliya"
