Dream - News, videos, and articles about Israel's attacks on the people of Gaza, Palestine continue to fill social media, television, and various sources of information. Children in elementary school (SD) may start to be curious, asking about the war, who is right and wrong, or who they should support. Meanwhile, older children in junior high and high school may throw out many critical questions.
Parents, as always relied upon by their children, usually become their main source of information and a remedy for their curiosity. Facing children's questions about Palestine and Israel, psychologist Najelaa Shihab provides tips.
Through her upload on Instagram @najelaashihab, she emphasizes the importance of building a discussion at home. It can start by learning about the early history of the formation of Israel through the Zionist movement. Create diagrams or graphics that are easily understandable for children about Palestine and Israel.
"Create a timeline about the important events that have occurred between Palestine and Israel since 1897 when the Zionist movement began. In 1917, the Balfour Declaration and the British occupation until the wars in 1948-1949 and 1967 which resulted in the UN resolution, the first intifada in 1987, and so on until the recent developments in 2023," expressed Najelaa.
Avoid looking at photos and videos that are horrifying with children, it is better to search for stories of the struggle of Palestinian citizens defending their homeland in Gaza.
"Invite children to read personal stories of victims. Genocide is not just about numbers and data, there are so many stories that are not only heartbreaking but also amazing about the resistance of the people," writes Najelaa."
To develop children's critical thinking, compare their analysis with other events. Create an open discussion and let the children express their opinions. You can also observe the situation of children in Gaza who cannot attend school freely and compare it with the situation in Indonesia.
"Invite children to see the importance of children's rights in the city where we live. Discuss how Indonesian children can learn, play, and obtain their basic rights in a safe and comfortable environment," expressed Najelaa.
It reminds us to continuously instill values about human rights in children. These values must become part of conversations and be exemplified through actions in educational institutions as well as at home.
