Dream - The face of Pharaoh Tutankhamun can be seen for the first time after more than 3,300 years of being a mystery. The original face is revealed after scientific reconstruction. Christian Corbet, the artist who sculpted Prince Philip in 2013, used a 3D model of the pharaoh's skull to bring the ancient Egyptian ruler to life. The model was created using a scan of Tutankhamun's skull, taken by Andrew Nelson from the University of Western Canada.
The final result is referred to as the most realistic reconstruction of the appearance of the pharaoh ever made.
"\u201c We work from a 3D skull model and then we add layers of muscles and truly shape the face," said Dr. Nelson, quoted from Mirror."
The use of computed tomography (CT) scanning to create accurate 3D skull models is just one aspect of creating new realistic imaging. "The anatomy of the skull guides facial reconstruction, so in my opinion, its appearance is much more realistic than what we have ever seen in the past," he said.
The team also uses network markers that indicate the depth of flesh in different locations based on modern Egyptians. Other mummy reconstructions have used network markers based on Caucasian subjects. "I then build layer by layer of muscle until the forensic reconstruction is complete," said Corbet. "The forensic statue is based on skull science, and the network markers as well as the measurements are based on the average male Egyptian subjects. There is no creative license here. Each stage is also photographed to prove my work," he added.
Forensic sculptures have closed eyes, no ears, and no expression. But once finished, Corbet had the opportunity to bring back that Tutankhamun's face to life.
As a final touch, a khepresh or war crown is added. The depiction of the crown was made for the documentary film by Soura Films, Tutankhamun: Allies & Enemies, aired on PBS. "I was allowed to be more creative and open-eyed, directing my gaze towards the eyes, and perhaps adding a little bit of lips on top. But once again, no artificial features were made - even the ears were carefully considered by all of us," he said.
Corbet is confident that the pharaoh will approve his work. "He reminds me that he is a pharaoh and gives approval for the completed work," he said. For your information, Tutankhamun ruled from 1332 BC until his death at the age of 19 in 1323 BC. (x)
