Dream - Mona Lisa. This is one of the artworks that has attracted a lot of attention from the world. This work by Leonardo da Vinci has many mysteries. Besides who the real figure of Mona Lisa is, the smile in the painting also holds a mystery. Yes, Mona Lisa's smile does invite questions. If observed, the thin smile in the painting stored in the Louvre Museum, France, seems to change. Various theories, interpretations, and even debates have been put forward. However, that mysterious smile still makes many people curious.
Now, a new theory has emerged. Now it's the turn of researchers from Sheffield Hallam University and Sunderland. This new theory claims to be able to fully reveal the mystery of Mona Lisa's smile.
In the study, researchers studied the painting La Bella Principessa, a work by da Vinci before Mona Lisa. In the painting, which was created in the late 15th century, researchers discovered da Vinci's cleverness in captivating people through his artwork. According to the researchers, with his reliable color blending technique, da Vinci's painting has influenced our peripheral vision or edge vision. Peripheral vision is someone's vision around the main object they are focused on. With that color blending technique, our vision seems to be deceived. The shape of the mouth in the painting appears to change, depending on our perspective.
This technique is called sfumato, can be seen in paintings of Mona Lisa and La Bella Principessa. According to researchers, other painters have tried to use this technique in some paintings, but not as skilled as da Vinci. "The smile disappears as quickly as someone who tries to 'observe' it, we call this visual illusion 'elusive smile'," wrote Alessandro Soranzo and Michelle Newberry, from Sheffield Hallam University in a paper published in the Journal of Vision Research.
To solve the mystery of how the illusion created by da Vinci works, researchers tested a number of volunteers to see the paintings from a distance or in a blurred version. Those who participated in the test agreed that Mona Lisa and La Bella Principessa appeared happier when seen from afar. The researchers then asked the volunteers in the study to look at a version of the painting that had black lines above the eyes, mouth, or both. The observation of the eyes and mouth was intended for the researchers to determine whether the change in expression occurred in both or only in the mouth area.
word Alessandro Soranzo
La Bella Principessa is believed to depict a 13-year-old woman, Bianca Sforza, daughter of Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan, who married a commander of the Milanese forces. However, she died a few months after the marriage, after experiencing an ectopic pregnancy, which added an expression of pain to her portrait. Soranzo added that da Vinci may have applied color blending techniques in his work since 1483. When painting 'Virgin of the Rocks'.
Michael Pickard, a researcher from the University of Sunderland, also co-wrote a study in 2013 with the same team. He said, da Vinci realized the inner turmoil of young girls on the verge of womanhood and marriage. "It is also not difficult to believe that Leonardo would look beneath the surface and want to capture the subtle essence of the girl, using that technique he would be known as a master through Mona Lisa," said Pickard.
