Feeling Traumatized, This Man Asks the Doctor to Amputate Two of His Healthy Fingers.

Dream - Having a complete body is a blessing for living creatures. However, a strange desire was experienced in the case of a man in Quebec, Canada who asked a doctor to amputate his two healthy fingers. Nadia Nadeau from the Department of Psychiatry at Université Laval reported the case of a patient who felt that the last two fingers on his left hand were not his since childhood.

The patient, whose name is not mentioned, has experienced mental trauma throughout his life. Those thoughts have caused him pain, easily offended, clumsiness, and nightmares depicting his fingers rotting or burning.

"Although feeling difficulty, the patient did not share his concerns about his fingers with his family because of shame. The man is said to often fantasize about removing his own fingers. 'While working in a wood sawmill, he considered making a small guillotine to cut off his fingers,' wrote Dr. Nadeau quoted from Oddity Central, cited by Dream, Monday, April 15, 2024."

However, he realizes that self-harming is not a safe way and will have negative impacts on his life.

"He realizes that self-harming is not a safe solution and can have an impact on relationships, reputation, and health. He cannot imagine himself living in the years to come with those fingers."
he said.

The brain image of the man appears normal. Initially, he was offered non-invasive treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy, antidepressants, antipsychotics, and exposure therapy. However, none of them proved to be successful. After a psychiatric evaluation, the patient was deemed capable of requesting voluntary amputation and was referred to the orthopedic department. Eventually, it was decided that removing both fingers was the best way to assist the patient.

After the operation, the patient must undergo an evaluation process for six months. Post-operation, nightmares immediately stop, along with emotional pressure.

"He has a constructive life plan, reducing anger, and improving well-being with family and at work. No regrets expressed. He now leads a worry-free life about his fingers, and all symptoms related to BID have been resolved. Amputation enables him to live in harmony with his identity,""

"tuturnya." in English is "he/she said."
