Like a Movie Story, 3 Sailors Stranded for a Week on an Uninhabited Small Island Safely After Writing 'HELP' on the Beach
It sounds like a movie story, but this incident is truly real.
It sounds like a movie story, but this incident is truly real.
Dream - In adventure films, when someone is stranded on a remote island, they will write a message on the beach to seek help. Although it sounds like just a fantasy, who would have thought that the advice often seen in these films would actually save a group of lost sailors on an uninhabited island. Quoting Itv.com, three men were rescued from a small island in the Pacific Ocean after writing "HELP" in the sand using palm leaves. The three of them had been stranded for a week before being rescued by the US Navy and Coast Guard operation.
A group of people initially planned to go fishing in the waters around Pikelot Atoll, part of Micronesia. However, the 20-foot boat they were on was trapped by large waves and its engine was damaged.
"Luckily, the boat that could no longer move managed to land on a small uninhabited island called Pikelot. However, their radio ran out of battery before they could ask for help. Unable to contact anyone from that remote island, they decided to seek help in a unique way. Like a story in a movie, the sailors gathered palm leaves and arranged them into the word "HELP" on the beach."
During a week stranded, the group of sailors survived on coconut meat and clean water from a small well on the island. Officials said it is difficult to overstate how remote Pikelot is.
This island is part of the Federated States of Micronesia, a Pacific country between the Philippines and Hawaii consisting of more than 600 islands. The islands are scattered across approximately 2.5 million square kilometers of ocean. The Coast Guard said that a US Navy P-8A surveillance jet, dispatched from Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan, spotted the "HELP" sign made of palm leaves on the beach on April 7th.
After seeing signs of life, they lowered essential supplies and communication equipment. After that, the Coast Guard hurriedly carried out rescue efforts.
Upon arrival at the small island, one of the Coast Guard officers realized that he was the third cousin of one of the men, and the fourth cousin of the other two. One of the beach rescuers was Petty Officer Second Class Eugene Halishlius. The stranded people were surprised to see that Halishlius was Micronesian and spoke the local language.
"I can see on their faces, 'Whoa! Who is the person who can speak our language?'", said Halishlius to CNN, ITV News partner in the US, in an interview.
When he mentioned his name to the first stranded person who reached the rescue boat, the abandoned person was astonished. Who would have thought, the stranded person turned out to have a family relationship with the rescuer. "This is a crazy world, it turns out I have a family relationship with them!" said Halishlius. "He didn't believe that I, along with the Coast Guard, tried to save them," he said.
