Dream - The abundance of affordable imported goods has become a threat to the local trading industry in recent years. Moreover, imported goods easily enter Indonesia through e-commerce. This certainly needs to be anticipated through policies to protect the domestic industry, especially micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Minister of Trade Zulkifli Hasan revealed 3 efforts that have been made to empower MSMEs so that they can compete with imported goods. Here are some of them.
1. Trade Diplomacy
The first thing Zulhas tried to do was overcome trade barriers with various countries in Europe and America.
"Many trade barriers. In the past, it was free trade, but not anymore. If it's not a friend, it's not possible. That's why diplomacy is necessary, we also engage in business-to-business and government-to-government (G2G) to facilitate (promotion of SMEs)."
He said during the launch of JMFW 2025 on Wednesday, July 17, 2024 at the Auditorium of the Ministry of Trade, Central Jakarta.

2. Trade Promotion
The Ministry also conducts trade promotion to India, the Middle East, and even Latin America to enhance export activities. One of the promotional efforts is also carried out by offering participation in events such as New York Fashion Week (NYFW) to support the local fashion industry.
3. Protecting Domestic Industries
In response to the abundance of affordable imported goods, Zulhas protects the domestic trade industry by seeking support from the National Police Chief and the Attorney General to form a task force to protect small and medium enterprises (UMKM) from illegal trade. In the future, imported products will be subject to Anti-Dumping Import Duty, Security Level Import Duty, and others. Previously, import trade has also been regulated in Trade Minister Regulation No. 36 of 2023.
In addition to those three efforts, Zulhas also expressed that the aforementioned three aspects must be supported by collaboration from various parties such as business actors, educators, and media in order for the government program to empower local SMEs to be realized.
