"Dream - Singapore has implemented a passport-free policy in certain locations, particularly at land borders with Malaysia."
"Starting from next Tuesday, passengers traveling by car between Singapore and Malaysia can display the MyICA QR code."
Quoting CNBC International, according to the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority, this new regulation applies to those who pass through the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints in Singapore. This step is considered to accelerate the immigration inspection process without compromising security.
"Requirements"
Citizens of Singapore and international visitors can create QR codes using the MyICA mobile application owned by the Singapore government. Group codes for up to ten people can also be created for passengers traveling together in a car.
However, QR code check-in is not available for two types of tourists, namely those who are visiting Singapore for the first time and those who are using a different passport from their previous visit.
According to the authorities, this new technique will reduce immigration processing time by more than 30%, saving approximately 20 seconds for cars carrying four passengers and up to one minute for cars carrying ten people.
Singapore aims to expand QR code permissions to more tourists crossing checkpoints through other forms of transportation in the future. The QR entry program for Singapore is part of a larger effort to modernize border control and security procedures in the city-state to manage higher volumes of tourists amidst an aging workforce crisis.
"In the meantime, the passport-free immigration permit at Changi Airport, which is based on biometric verification, is currently undergoing a trial, according to a representative from the Changi Airport Group to CNBC Travel. However, the launch date for this program at Changi Airport has not been released yet."
As information, the checkpoint connecting Johor Bahru, Malaysia, and Woodlands, Singapore, is one of the busiest international border crossings in the world. According to the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority of Singapore, more than 1.8 million travelers passed through these two crossings on the island, connecting it with Malaysia, between the 7th and 10th of March.
On March 8, before a one-week holiday for Singapore public schools, there were 495,000 people who broke the record by passing through the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints, surpassing the 485,000 recorded travelers in August 2019.
