Jokowi assesses the achievements made by BRI and Sunarso to be similar to the figure of Muhammad Yunus, a banker from Bangladesh who initiated Grameen Bank by providing credit to microenterprises and women.

Sunarso was officially appointed as the President Director of BRI in 2019, replacing Suprajarto.
