4 Sunnah when Entering the City of Mecca, One of Them is Raising Hands when Seeing the Kaaba
Mekah is a holy city highly revered by Allah SWT.
Mekah is a holy city highly revered by Allah SWT.
Dream - Mecca is a holy city for Muslims that is greatly honored by Allah SWT. Mecca is a destination that is highly desired by Muslims all over the world to perform the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimage. As the Prophet Muhammad said: "Indeed, Allah has honored this city on the day He created the heavens and the earth. It is a holy city with a foundation of honor that Allah has established until the Day of Judgment." In this city, Muslims have the opportunity to be closer to Allah SWT. In fact, prayers made in this city are very effective.
Realizing that Mecca is a very sacred city, there are certainly etiquettes and recommended practices that need to be known by Muslims when they want to visit. Well, here are some recommended practices when entering the city of Mecca as summarized by Dream through various sources.
There are several important sunnahs that should be observed by Muslims before entering the city of Mecca. The following are the sunnahs:
Sunah when entering the city of Mecca for the first time is to stay at Dzu Thuwa. Dzu Thuwa is a valley or well connected to the pilgrimage of the Prophet Muhammad. Its location is in the area of Mecca which means a hungry person. The Prophet Muhammad himself once stayed overnight at Dzu Thuwa when performing the hajj and umrah before entering Al-Haram. As explained in the hadith:
"In that place, a mosque was built and named the Bir Dzi Thuwa Mosque. Besides that, Nafi' said, 'Previously, when Ibn 'Umar was near the city of Makkah, he stopped reciting the talbiyah, then he stayed in Dzu Thuwa, performed the Fajr prayer there, and took a bath. He said that the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) did this.' [Muttafaq 'alaih: Sahih al-Bukhari (III/435, no. 1573), and similar narrations; Sahih Muslim (II/919, no. 1259), Sunan Abi Dawud (V/318, no. 1848)]"
The next Sunnah when entering the city of Mecca is through ats-Tsaniyah al-'Ulya (upper road). As explained in the hadith of 'Umar, he said: "The Prophet Muhammad used to enter the city of Mecca from ats-Tsaniyah al-'Ulya (upper road) and exit from ats-Tsaniyah as-Sufla (lower road)." [Muttafaq 'alaih: Sahih al-Bukhari (III/436, no. 1575) this is his wording, Sahih Muslim (II/918, no. 1257), Sunan an-Nasa-i (V/200), Sunan Ibn Majah (II/981, no. 2940)]
When entering the Masjid Haram, it is recommended to start with the right foot. Besides that, it is also recommended to recite the following prayer: "I seek refuge in Allah, the Almighty, with His noble face and eternal power, from the cursed Satan. In the name of Allah, may blessings and peace be upon Muhammad. O Allah, open the doors of Your mercy for me." [Sahih: Al-Kalimuth Thayyib]
When Dream's friend sees the Kaaba, it is recommended to raise the hands. At that time, the Hajj pilgrims are also encouraged to pray. The prayer from 'Umar is authentic. Here is the recitation of the prayer: اللّهَُمَّ انَنَُ السَلَُمَّ فَلُّلََنَُنَّ حَلُّلُفََ. "O Allah, You are the giver of peace and from You comes peace, so grant us life, O our Lord, with peace." [HR al-Baihaqi]
