"Dream - Smartphones with screens that are capable of repairing themselves are predicted to start appearing in the market in 2028, according to analyst company CCS Insight. This was revealed by CCS Insight analysts when releasing a summary of top technology predictions for 2024 and beyond."

CCS Insight estimates that smartphone manufacturers will start producing phones with 'self-healing' screens within five years. The way it works is by incorporating a 'nano technology layer' on the surface of these advanced phone screens.

If the screen is scratched or cracked, the phone will create a new layer on its surface. This nano layer reacts when exposed to air and automatically fills in the scratches or cracks.

The amazing nano technology may seem unrealistic like in science fiction movies. But such technology is truly real, and will begin to be implemented on mobile screens in the next five years.

Various companies have been researching self-repairing smartphone screen technology for the past few years.

The South Korean electronic giant, LG, has been boasting about its smartphone with a self-healing screen since 2013.

This company has released a smartphone named G Flex, which features a vertically curved screen and a 'self-healing' layer on the back cover. Unfortunately, LG did not explain how the self-healing screen technology actually works at that time.

Some mobile phone manufacturers have even taken the initiative to patent smart phone technology that can heal itself.

In 2017, Motorola filed a patent for a screen made of polymer material that, when cracked, can repair itself. At that time, Motorola explained that when the polymer material is exposed to heat, it will repair the cracks based on its original shape.

Meanwhile, Apple has previously obtained a patent for a foldable iPhone with a self-repairing screen cover when damaged. "There are several new technologies being developed currently that seem to be something that could be commonly used in the future," said Wood. However, Wood reminded that it does not mean that the technology will magically restore a shattered screen to its original state. The developed self-healing technology can only repair small and fine screen scratches.

Wood said that self-healing technology seems to still not be able to be embedded in commercially sold phones. There are several obstacles to launching a phone with technology that can repair itself on a large scale.

First, companies need a lot of investment in research and development to ensure they can identify new innovations on smartphone screens. A consistent flow of funds is also needed to market and sell phones in large volumes.
