Japan Has New Technologically Advanced 3D Hologram Currency, Its Character Image Inspires

- The Japanese government has introduced its first new paper money in the past 20 years. This new currency uses 3D hologram technology aimed at combating counterfeiting. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida praised the advanced anti-counterfeiting features of the new 10,000, 5,000, and 1,000 yen banknotes as something historic.

Although launching the latest edition, the paper money that has been used so far will still be valid as a legal payment instrument. According to local media reports, the old paper money is still needed for most vending machines and bus fares.

"I hope the public will like this new banknote, and this banknote will help improve the economy of Japan,"

He said to the journalists at the Bank of Japan, quoted from CEO Insight Asia, Friday, July 5, 2024.

Kishida highlights that the individuals depicted on the banknote symbolize Japan's achievements in terms of capitalism, gender equality, and scientific progress.

Currency notes of 10,000 yen, equivalent to US$62 based on the current exchange rate, feature Eiichi Shibusawa, known as the "father of Japanese capitalism" and a prominent figure in the modernization of the Japanese economy. With many companies established, Shibusawa played a vital role in shaping the Japanese economy. Currency notes of 5,000 yen, valued at approximately US$30, feature Umeko Tsuda, a feminist and pioneering educator who founded a college.

In the 1,000 yen banknote, which is worth around US$6.20, there is Shibasaburo Kitasato, a famous doctor and bacteriologist known for his significant contributions in studying tetanus and infectious diseases outbreaks.

On the other hand, each banknote features Tokyo Station, wisteria flowers, and Mount Fuji, artwork by ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai. The government plans to print nearly 7.5 billion of these new banknotes by the end of March next year. It is estimated to be around 1.6 trillion yen (or approximately US$10 billion). These new banknotes will be in circulation within a day.

Aside from that, this new banknote has a larger print to improve readability, which is highly beneficial for the aging Japanese population. Initially, these new banknotes will be distributed to banks and other financial institutions before becoming available at ATMs and stores, as outlined by the Bank of Japan. Cash remains the dominant mode of transaction in Japan, with non-cash payments being slower to be widely adopted compared to many other countries.
