"Dream - Japan is predicted to face a shortage of nearly one million foreign workers by 2040. This was revealed by the research institute Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)."
The decline in foreign labor occurred amidst Japan's efforts to maintain economic growth as the population decreases. According to Reuters, at the current rate, 5.91 million foreigners will be working in Japan by 2040.
The number is almost one million fewer than the number of foreign workers needed to maintain the targeted average annual growth rate of 1.24%.
The demand-supply gap for foreign labor has increased more than twice the previous estimate by JICA in 2022. After JICA researchers updated the data to account for slower economic growth than anticipated in countries that are emigrating such as Vietnam, Myanmar, and Cambodia.
Foreign workers are very important to the economy of the Sakura country because they help fill the severe labor shortage caused by rapid aging and declining birth rates.
In October last year, the number of foreign workers in Japan increased more than fourfold in the past 15 years to 2.05 million, or about 3% of the total workforce. The Japanese government itself has expanded work visa permits to several blue-collar and skilled sectors, easing public opinion on accepting immigrant labor.
However, according to JICA experts, Japan needs to increase its efforts to remain competitive in the global race for talent, despite various obstacles including the weakening of the yen currency, conventionally low wages, and human rights issues.
It is known that the Japanese Yen fell to its lowest level in 38 years against the US dollar and reached a record low against the euro on Wednesday, July 3, 2024. If it is also reached a record low at 174.48 against the euro. The euro last rose 0.4 percent to 174.22 per yen.
