Dream - Prosecutors in Italy claim the exploitation of migrant workers who produce luxury bags such as Dior and Armani. According to the New York Post, prosecutors reported that workers are only paid $2 per hour, around Rp32.5 thousand (exchange rate Rp16,282), to make these luxury bags which are then sold for thousands of dollars.
According to The Wall Street Journal report, Dior, a luxury brand from France owned by Bernard Arnault, imposes a cost of around US$57 to suppliers for producing handbags sold in stores at a price of approximately US$2,780.
While Armani, based in Milan, pays US$270 to suppliers to make handbags that are then sold in the retail market for less than US$2,000.
The Italian authorities obtained the figures after the police conducted a series of raids on workshops and emergency factories that employed undocumented immigrants and other unregistered individuals.
The prosecutor in Milan accuses the companies of employing subcontractors who hire Chinese migrants and other foreign workers who are paid only between US$2 and US$3 per hour. The workers are said to often sleep in the workshops and are forced to work from dusk until dawn, including on holidays and weekends.
In response to the raid, Armani denied any wrongdoing in GA Operations, outsourcing the production of Armani products. "The company always has controls and preventive measures in place to minimize abuse in the supply chain," Armani stated to the New York Post. "GA Operations will collaborate with full transparency with the authorities to clarify its position in this matter," Armani continued.
Meanwhile, according to the police, GA Operations hires subcontractors, who in turn employ illegal Chinese subcontractors that hire underage workers, some of whom are illegally in Italy.
They are suspected of ignoring health and safety regulations as well as regulations governing working hours, breaks, and holidays. The police said that this is part of the caporalato system, an illegal intermediary and worker exploitation often associated with the agricultural sector.
Japan is predicted to face a shortage of nearly one million foreign workers by 2040.
