There are differences of opinion among scholars regarding whether it is permissible for women to perform the Hajj without a mahram.
Dream - Hajj is a mandatory worship for Muslims who are able to perform it. Able in terms of material, physical, and mental. As explained in the words of Allah SWT in Surah Ali Imran verse 97: "Performing Hajj is a duty of mankind towards Allah, (that is) for those who are able to make the journey to the House of Allah. Whoever denies (the obligation of Hajj), then surely Allah is Self-Sufficient, not in need of anything from the universe."
Other than that, Muslims who will perform the Hajj pilgrimage must fulfill the predetermined requirements.
One of them for a Muslim woman is a mahram who accompanies her. Regarding this requirement, there are differences of opinion among scholars. To find out whether a woman can perform Hajj without a mahram, here is as summarized by Dream through various sources.
Quoted from nu.or.id, mahram is a woman who is forbidden to be married for several reasons.
In this case, its prohibition is divided into two, namely hurmah mu'abbadah (forbidden forever) and hurmah mu'aqqatah (forbidden for a certain period of time). Hurmah mu'abbadah is caused by several factors, such as kinship, permanent relationship (mushaharah), and breastfeeding. Women who are forbidden to marry due to kinship are seven. Namely, mother, daughter, sister, daughter of brother (niece), daughter of sister (niece), paternal aunt, and maternal aunt.
Women who are forbidden to marry due to consanguinity, namely the wife of one's father, the wife of one's son, the mother of one's wife (mother-in-law), and the daughter of one's wife (stepdaughter). Furthermore, those who are forbidden to marry due to nursing, namely the breastfeeding mother, the foster sister, the foster sister's daughter, the foster sister's daughter, the foster aunt (paternal foster relative), the maternal foster relative, and the foster daughter (who nurses from the wife).
Regarding women who perform the Hajj alone without a mahram, in this case, it is still a question for some Muslims.
According to Sheikh Muhammad bin Shalih Al-Utsaimin, he said that women are not allowed to come alone to Saudi Arabia to perform the Hajj pilgrimage. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said in his sermon, "Women are not allowed to travel except with their mahram." (Narrated by Bukhari) Then, someone stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, my wife went for Hajj, and I have obligations in the war, such and such."
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "Go and perform Hajj with your wife." (HR. Bukhari and Muslim) Sheikh Al-Uthaymeen said, "A woman who is not accompanied by her mahram is not obligated to perform Hajj." He also said that a woman who does not perform Hajj because she does not have a mahram is not sinful. This is not harmful. The woman is forgiven because she does not have the ability according to Islamic law.
