Lately, more and more people, especially on the internet, are choosing lemon water as their favorite morning drink. On several social media platforms like TikTok, lemon water has become popular as a drink claimed to be able to cure acne, detoxify, and aid in weight loss. Support from celebrities on social media has also increased the popularity of lemon water as a drink considered essential for those trying to lose weight. However, are these claims factual or just mere trends?
According to Melissa Mitri, RD, the source of the trend that popularizes lemon water as a regular morning drink is not entirely clear. However, consuming lemon water has become part of traditional medicine that is believed to have evolved over time. Mitri added that in 2008, a study in Japan linked the antioxidant content in lemons to weight loss in mice. Since then, public interest in this practice has increased. Some people believe that the acid found in lemons has the ability to break down fat cells in the body. However, evidence supporting this claim is still limited.
Drinking lemon water is a good way to increase daily body hydration. Lemons are rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, vitamin B6, riboflavin, a little magnesium, and other nutrients. Although lemons have many nutritional contents, experts agree that drinking lemon water will not help everyone lose weight. According to Samantha Turner, MPH, RDN, a registered dietitian and owner of OakStone Health and Nutrition, lemon water is not always better than plain water in managing someone's weight.
"Until now, data that can support the claim that lemon water helps in weight loss is still limited. However, following the trend of drinking lemon water is not wrong. In general, drinking lemon water is also considered safe and beneficial for health. However, if consuming lemon water with the aim of losing or managing weight, it is important to balance it with other healthy habits, such as exercise."
