Dream - It has been a long time since we heard the concept of having to chew food at least 32 times before swallowing. This is because food that is too hard will be difficult to digest.
Chewing food sufficiently also makes us more focused on eating. In the process of chewing, food is crushed into smaller particles, which are then mixed with saliva and passed on to the stomach for further processing.
In other words, the process of food digestion begins in the mouth, with the function of chewing. Quoted from the book Diet and Nutrition: A Holistic Approach written by Rudolph Ballentine, "The mouth is more than just the opening of the digestive tract. The mouth is an essential part of the digestion process." "Basically, there are two main reasons why people feel stressed when chewing food properly. First, it helps break down food into smaller particles, and second, it helps mix with saliva, which is key to facilitating the process," said Rupali Datta, a nutrition expert.
Richa Garg, in her website Arogyam Nutrition, explains that in India, the tradition of chewing food 32 times is associated with the number of teeth we have. In other words, chewing 32 times means chewing food once with each tooth.
This number is only given as a reasonable idea to build an easy gut-brain connection for better digestion. Chewing food slowly not only breaks down food more efficiently but also gives enough time for the brain to send signals to the intestines to release digestive fluids and enzymes.
Horace Fletcher, an American health expert of the Victorian era, was the first person to propose the concept of chewing food 32 times. Although this number is just a reminder of the importance of chewing in our memory, the process of chewing does indeed have several nutritional, biological, and health benefits.
Fruits that are harder like nuts take longer to chew. Meanwhile, softer fruits like watermelon take less time to chew.
Experts also state that the number of chews may vary from one food to another. So actually, it doesn't have to be 32 times, but just adjust it according to the food being consumed. The key is not to rush and enjoy every bite.
Please allocate enough time to enjoy your food and engage all your senses to get the maximum results from the nutrients obtained from food. Eat with focus and savor every bite, and choose healthy menu options. Report by Aykaputri Amalia Rahmani / Source: Food NDTV
