Dream - The Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo) disagrees with the proposal for a four-day work week. Apindo believes that such a system will decrease work productivity.
This proposal was previously expressed by the Indonesian Consumer Foundation (YLKI) for the government to implement the working system that has been used in Germany, where there will be 3 working holidays.
The General Chairperson of Apindo, Shinta Kamdani, explained that the regulation of working hours in a country greatly influences the productivity level of that country. One of them is the length of working hours in one week, currently applying a 5-day work week.
Shinta said to Liputan6.com, quoted on Monday, February 12, 2024.
Shinta mentions that the aspect of employment in Indonesia is regulated in Law Number 6 of 2023 concerning the Determination of Government Regulation in Lieu of Law Number 2 of 2023 concerning Job Creation. The regulation explains that Indonesia still applies a 40-hour work week with the possibility of 4 hours of overtime per day, with 5 or 6 working days per week.

Shinta also mentioned about the education level of the workforce in Indonesia, which is dominated by graduates of junior high school and below, reaching 58 percent. This is reflected in the data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) in February 2024.
"Low levels of education will contribute to low productivity," he said.
The Chairman of the Daily Management of YLKI, Tulus Abadi, said that the four-day work policy can boost the productivity of workers. According to him, the four-day work system has been established in Germany starting from February 1, 2024. "Starting from 1/2/2024, Germany is implementing a trial of the 4-day work system. The goal is to make workers happier and more productive," Tulus wrote in his WhatsApp status quoted from Liputan6.com, Friday, February 9, 2024.
Tulus then proposed that the 4-day work system be tested in the Jabodetabek area, which is currently still the patron of activities and the economy at the national level. According to his consideration, adding 1 day of work leave will also contribute to the spread of pollution in Jabodetabek. In addition, it can provide more time for workers from the region to go back to their respective hometowns.
