Indonesian Hajj Pilgrims 2024 Dominated by Elementary School Graduates and Elderly Farmers.

Dream - The operational implementation of the Hajj worship has entered its 15th day. The departure of the first wave of pilgrims has been completed since May 24, 2024. Data from the Integrated Hajj Information System and Computerization (Siskohat) recorded a total of 88,987 regular Hajj pilgrims who departed in the first wave are now in the birthplace of Prophet Muhammad, Medina. Out of the 229 flight groups (Kloter) that have arrived, a total of 14 Hajj pilgrims have passed away in the City of the Prophet.

The spokesperson of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Anna Hasbie, said that the organization of the 2024 hajj pilgrimage will be the largest civil mobilization process ever. In fact, this year's hajj pilgrimage is the largest ever undertaken by the government. "The complexity of the challenges is very high and that is reflected in the diversity of the profile of Indonesian hajj pilgrims, both in terms of education, profession, health, and travel experience," said Anna, as quoted on Monday, May 27, 2024.

Based on the data of Indonesian hajj pilgrims in 2024, as many as 87,673 pilgrims (98.52%) have never performed the fifth pillar of Islam. Only 1,314 individuals (1.48%) are known to have performed the hajj pilgrimage.

While from the gender side, the pilgrims in this year's hajj season are dominated by women, reaching 49,176 people (55.3%), while male pilgrims number 39,811 (44.7%). The majority of Indonesian hajj pilgrims who departed in wave I have an educational background of elementary school (26,025), followed by high school (22,541), bachelor's degree (21,593), and junior high school (10,126). The rest are hajj pilgrims with a last education of diploma, master's degree, doctorate, and others.

From a health perspective, a total of 68,781 pilgrims are categorized as high risk (77%), with the highest number in the age range of 60-70 years (23,856) and 50-60 years (21,641). There are at least 59 disabled pilgrims, consisting of 24 males and 35 females, with the highest number coming from the Solo Embarkation (10 people). Out of these 59 disabled individuals, 51 are classified as high risk.

From the age perspective, there are 19,375 pilgrims who fall into the elderly category aged 65 years and above, with a composition of 49.5 percent male and 50.5 percent female. The majority of them have never performed Hajj before (98.75%). The majority of elderly pilgrims (50%) are in the age range of 65-70 years. There are four pilgrims recorded with ages above 100 years. One of them is Mbah Harjo Mislan, who is the oldest pilgrim this year at the age of 109.

"Regarding their professions, the majority of elderly pilgrims work as farmers, followed by housewives, retired civil servants, private employees, and traders. In terms of education, the majority of elderly pilgrims graduated from elementary school (10,538), followed by high school (3,380), junior high school (2,215), and only 1,756 have a bachelor's degree. There are 246 pilgrims with a master's degree and 18 individuals with a doctoral degree. 'The profile of these pilgrims reflects the challenges and complexities faced by officials in their efforts to provide the best services to the Hajj pilgrims,' concluded Anna."
