125 Juta Orang Kelaparan Akibat Kebiasaan Buang Makanan di Indonesia, Apa Dampaknya Bagi Ekonomi dan Lingkungan?

"125 Million People Starving Due to Food Waste Habits in Indonesia, What are the Impacts on Economy and Environment?"

Dream - Food is something that can never be separated from daily life. The body needs nutritional intake from the food consumed. It is not uncommon for us to consume food excessively and then waste it. This bad habit turns out to have negative effects on the environment globally and the national economy. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), one-third of the food produced is wasted due to human behavior that is wasteful of food.

Therefore, the National Food Agency (BAPANAS) sees this phenomenon as an urgency because in Indonesia itself there are still many people who lack food, but on the other hand, there are still many people who waste food.

125 Million People Starving Due to Food Waste Habits in Indonesia, What are the Impacts on Economy and Environment?

Every year, there are 23-48 million tons of wasted food that end up in the trash. In fact, 40% of the waste in the Landfill (TPA) is food waste.

This certainly contributes to global warming and causes economic losses reaching Rp213-551 trillion. Or equivalent to 4-5% of the total Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which is certainly not small, and if the losses are calculated, it is equal to our state budget for 5 years. Then, if this wasted food is utilized again, it can feed 61-125 million people in Indonesia.

Then, what should we do to reduce the amount of food waste? According to Nita Yulianis, Director of Food Security and Nutrition at the National Food Agency, reducing the amount of food waste can be done starting from small things. First, take only the necessary amount of food and make sure to finish it, don't waste it. We also need to be wise in shopping for food, don't buy all discounted food products, only buy the ones we will consume. Then, don't be ashamed to take away any leftover food from restaurants. We can finish the food at home or, if it remains untouched, we can give it to someone else.

Pay attention to the expiration date of food, do not eat food that is still long before its expiration date, so that food that is about to expire will not be eaten and end up being thrown away.

For large-scale, processed food or food ingredients that are untouched and still fit for consumption can be collected in the form of a food bank and then distributed to communities in need. Lastly, we can also reuse food ingredients that can still be utilized, such as broccoli stems made into soup, bones processed into broth, and even leftover rice processed into snacks. Leftover processed food that is still suitable for consumption can also be reprocessed into other dishes, such as shredded fried chicken used for soup.

The steps are called zero food waste. Many people assume that zero food waste is a step to process food that has become waste. In fact, zero food waste utilizes food that is still fit for consumption, but only because of certain circumstances, the food cannot be utilized. The food is still in a safe condition, not damaged, but potentially wasted. "We need to understand that this is a national issue. When we don't contribute individually, it will affect the heat of the Indonesian earth, which when we want to plant crops again, it's not friendly," said Nita, Friday, April 19, 2024.

There are three goals that BAPANAS wants to achieve related to food in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or Sustainable Development Goals. The first is without poverty.

The following is the translation of the given 'Bahasa' text to 'English' while preserving any html tags: "The first is to end hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture. The second is to ensure responsible consumption and production. To achieve these goals, BAPANAS actively promotes the "Stop Food Waste" campaign together with the pentahelix sector consisting of academics, business actors, communities, government, and media through the Food Saving Movement as an effort to prevent food waste."

"Collaboration with the private sector allows us to strengthen the positive impact towards a more sustainable and brighter future of Indonesia Emas 2045, starting with the importance of the younger generation's awareness to prevent and reduce food waste."

"spoken Nyoto Suwignyo, Deputy for Food and Nutrition Vulnerability of BAPANAS."

BAPANAS also collaborated with LG and FoodCycle Indonesia through active participation in the Better Life Festival talk show organized by LG Electronics Indonesia at Commune Space Area, Chillax Sudirman on Friday, April 19th. BAPANAS also supports the distribution of food donations using the NFA Food Truck at three locations in the Jabodetabek area. Report: Aykaputri Amalia Rahmani.
