Dream - Consuming excessive amounts of added sugar can indeed increase the risk of developing diabetes. But this sugar intake is only one part of the trigger for this disease. This means there are still other triggering factors.
Diabetes occurs when the body is unable to effectively regulate blood sugar levels. This can happen when the pancreas stops producing enough insulin, cells become resistant to insulin, or both.
Insulin serves to move sugar from the bloodstream into cells. If the body does not produce enough insulin or is resistant to insulin, then blood sugar levels become very high. High blood sugar levels over a long period of time can increase the risk of heart disease, nerve damage, and kidney damage.
There are two types of diabetes. In type 1, an autoimmune condition occurs when the immune system attacks the pancreas. This autoimmune condition destroys its ability to produce insulin. Type 1 diabetes is relatively rare, accounting for about 5-10% of diabetes cases worldwide. In type 2, the pancreas stops producing enough insulin and the body's cells no longer respond to the insulin produced. Type 2 diabetes accounts for more than 90% of diabetes cases. It is primarily triggered by dietary and lifestyle factors.
Routine consumption of sweet drinks/foods can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes. To reduce the negative impact of high sugar intake, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2020-2025 recommend that no more than 10% of total daily calories should come from added sugars.
Consuming large amounts of added sugar is indeed associated with diabetes, but this does not apply to natural sugar. Natural sugar found in fruits and vegetables is very good for the body. Because it is combined with fiber, water, and other nutrients, fruits and vegetables are digested more slowly. So there is a small chance of increasing blood sugar.
