Fasting involves self-control and discipline that can help develop the ability to overcome temptations and prevent impulsivity. This is good for building mental resilience," wrote Dr. Santi, on her Instagram\r\n@santi_psychiatrist."
Many people think that during fasting, it makes us often lose focus. It turns out that this is not correct because according to Dr. Santi, the opposite actually happens.
"Fasting can help improve focus and concentration by reducing disturbances that can come from the digestive process. Some of my patients even report feeling calmer and more focused while fasting," he said.
Doctor Santi also revealed that several studies have shown that fasting can help lower cortisol levels, or what is often called the stress hormone.
"In several studies, it has been found that fasting can affect stress hormones such as cortisol. In some cases, this can help reduce stress levels and improve mental well-being," said Dr. Santi.
During one month of fasting, if done properly, the eating pattern also tends to be regular. Only eat during sahur (pre-dawn meal) and iftar (meal to break the fast). Not to mention if consuming intake that is carefully balanced, both in terms of fiber, protein, and vitamins. A regular eating pattern and a balanced intake of nutrients are very important for maintaining mental health.
"Regulating eating patterns and hormonal changes have the potential to affect sleep cycles and have a positive impact on mental health," said Dr. Santi.
